The new program is part of the national Diabetes Education in Tribal Schools (DETS) project. The DETS lessons are aimed at students in kindergarten through 12th grade. The lessons show students how to manage diabetes or lower their risk of developing the condition. This includes making important lifestyle changes. The program encourages students to make healthy food. It also urges young people to exercise every day. In addition, the program provides tips for children. The tips help children keep their lives in balance. This is an idea familiar to all tribes.
