Today marks nine years since Aaliyah’s tragic death in an airplane crash. Her unique style, hypnotic vocals, and smooth criminal moves just made her a force to reckon with and just when her star was shining bright and she was about to take over in both music & Hollywood, her time was cut short. Her angelic and peaceful being was something that transcended through beauty, music and overall aura. It’s a fact she’s no longer here, but her memory and music will forever be in my heart and mind…and here’s why.

It was 1994- a time when I would listen in to Hot 97 specifically for the Angie Martinez & FunkMaster Flex Show like clockwork and I’d be ready with blank cassette, finger on pressed gently on the record button, ready to record at a moment’s notice for the playlist of the day. It was a daily routine for me as a teen…an era where cassettes where going out as CD’s were coming in. And the first CD I ever purchased in my life was “Age Ain’t Nothin’ But A Number” and all because of this classic video…

“Back & Forth”

Then Aaliyah blew me with this beautiful The Isley Brother’s remake…WOW!

“At Your Best (You Are Love)”

And just around the time I had a mean crush on a guy 3 years older than me…this song really hit home! “I got a thang for you and I can’t let go…”

“Age At Nothin’ But A Number”

For about a year straight I bumped all of Aaliyah’s tracks, rocked my hair straight, went extra hard on the tomboy look…I was Aaliyah’d out!

Fast forward three years later, 1997 and I was still a certified Aaliyah FAN! At this point Aaliyah began to dabble with her sexy side and albeit naughty side by teaming up with Lil’Kim on…

“If You’re Girl Only Knew”

Before emails and texts, people actually wrote letters and boy did I write a plethora of letters to then boyfriends…

“4 Page Letter”
I can remember chillen up in my room, practicing those moves @3:40 mark in front of the mirror, lol!
Not only did this video exude loads of sexiness but it also introduced us to former eye candy Ginuwine and master of beats, Timbaland.

“One In A Million”

And I continued practicing Aaliyah’s moves in my room, lol…

Then she killed it with this joint…certified platinum!

“Are You That Somebody”

After all that practicing in my room, I had this choreography DOWN! I can still do a number today, lol.

She inspired me with…

“Try Again”

And in 2001, Aaliyah blessed us with her final video…another choreography I had down…damn, where was youtube when I needed it.

“Rock The Boat”

All in all, Aaliyah played a major role in my life as a teenage girl, both as a role model and musician…babygirl will forever be in my memory. We can only imagine all the great things she would’ve accomplished if given more time on this earth. AALIYAH, I WILL MISS YOU FOREVER!

TIMBALAND TO MEDIA: “KEEP MY NAME OUT YA MOUTH!” http://str8nyc.com/2010/01/06/timbaland-to-media-keep-my-name-out-ya-mouth/ http://str8nyc.com/2010/01/06/timbaland-to-media-keep-my-name-out-ya-mouth/#comments Wed, 06 Jan 2010 13:37:07 +0000 J'More http://str8nyc.com/?p=31213 Tweet

Rapper/producer Timbaland has a simple message for the media–stay out of his damn business! He recently chopped it up with MTV News and explained how gossip almost ruined his relationship with Jay-Z and his discontent with how the media overtly dramatized Tiger Woods’ cheating scandal.

“The world needs to check themselves. Leave them people alone. Leave me alone. I don’t have beef with nobody. I have real friendships, and real friendships are meant to not always be on the right page, if you are real friends with somebody. OK, America? Don’t get in my personal life. I have too much money, I will find you. … Leave me alone. If you don’t know about Tim Mosley, don’t talk about Tim Mosely. All them Facebooks, Twitter, whatever, whatever, don’t be talking. All that talking behind people’s back … I’m a grown man. I ain’t got time for all that you say, she say. C’mon, man. Stay outta people’s business and just love music.” Adding, “Get back to enjoying the music. Get off of the Internet and enjoy the music. Ride in your car, run on your treadmill, put Walkmans on, not always your iPod. Realize what you are blessed with. … Get back to appreciation.”

TIMBALAND DONE WITH HIP-HOP?!…SAY IT AIN’T SO! http://str8nyc.com/2009/12/12/timbaland-says-hes-done-with-hip-hop-say-it-aint-so/ http://str8nyc.com/2009/12/12/timbaland-says-hes-done-with-hip-hop-say-it-aint-so/#comments Sat, 12 Dec 2009 16:10:47 +0000 J'More http://str8nyc.com/?p=29856 Tweet

With the recent release of his new album Shock Value II, it’s pretty evident that rapper/producer extraordinaire Timbaland is so over Hip-hop. Timbaland recently chopped it up with MTV and revealed that he’s done with the Hip-hop genre and you can pretty much tell he’s serious too–with collabos on his new album from Katy Perry to even Miley Cyrus…you get the point. He says,

“I was done with hip-hop a long time ago. Once my generation left, I left. I do it, but there’s nobody from my generation besides Jay who’s doing it. I look at Lil Wayne as being from my generation. Some people are still acceptable. Kanye is acceptable from my generation.” Adding, “It’s just not the same. By it not being the same, I kind of fade to black. I did music [on this album] that fits where I was going to in my age bracket. ‘What does Tim listen to in his car all the time?’ I love ’80s music. So how do I infuse ’80s with modern-day music? You Timbo the King, you gotta figure it out. I figured it out a couple of years ago with Nelly [Furtado] and Justin and myself. We had a tremendous run. I think it was good for me to do it that, because some people would say ‘Tim is cold.’ The same people who smile in my face would be the same ones to talk behind my back. But I got this run, I’m not gonna stop until I wanna stop.”

Looks like Timbo has found his niche and it just so happens to be that’s where the money is. But, I gotta admit I do miss the old Timbaland especially during his Magoo, Missy, Aaliyah and Genuwine days…they made magic everytime they stepped in the booth.

Check out Timbaland’s new video for his single “Say Something” featuring actor-turned-rapper Drake off his newly released album Shock Value II. I love that the video actually makes sense! It has a freakin’ storyline…something most music videos nowadays are lacking.

TIMBALAND DROPS CHRIS BROWN FROM HIS ALBUM…OUCH! http://str8nyc.com/2009/11/23/timbaland-drops-chris-brown-from-his-album-ouch/ http://str8nyc.com/2009/11/23/timbaland-drops-chris-brown-from-his-album-ouch/#comments Tue, 24 Nov 2009 01:49:31 +0000 J'More http://str8nyc.com/?p=28807 Tweet

It appears Timbaland doesn’t want his name to be attached to a woman beater. Word is the producer/rapper officially dropped Chris Brown from a track on his new album, Shock Value II. A snitch close to Chris revealed to TMZ, that Chris’s vocals were removed from a track called “The One I Love” because of the “drama” surrounding him. Timbaland’s manager, Marcus Spence did confirm that Chris was dropped from the track, however it was more so a “creative decision for both parties” adding, “There’s nothing against Chris. We love Chris.” But, according to rapper D.O.E who is featured on the track, the song was originally called “Maniac”, but was subsequently changed because “some people” didn’t think it would be a good idea to attach a woman beater Chris to a song with such a striking title.

Timbaland and Chris will be battling each other on the charts, as their albums are set to drop on the same day, December 8th. Wow!

You’d think with all the money these two honchos, Michael Jordan and Timbaland, have, they’d be smart enough to seek a professional stylista. Fellas, please leave the pimp gear for holiday occasions, like Halloween! Fortunately, Big Boi kept it fresh and oh so clean at GQ’s Man of the Year party. Work it Big Boi!
