“Legacy to me is success…”

Here’s his performance at the 2010 BET Awards before being cut off by the commercial break. It’s all good…right now its all the hype is about Drake, but this time next year J.Cole will take center stage. No rush ’cause legacy=success to J.Cole. I don’t this often but props to BET for finally step up and highlighting music with substance with BET Music Matters. NICE!

CIARA STILL DENIES 50 CENT IS HER MAN… http://str8nyc.com/2010/06/07/ciara-still-denies-50-cent-is-her-man/ http://str8nyc.com/2010/06/07/ciara-still-denies-50-cent-is-her-man/#comments Mon, 07 Jun 2010 23:57:21 +0000 J'More http://str8nyc.com/?p=39454 CIARA STILL DENIES 50 CENT IS HER MAN…

Last Friday, Ciara hit up DJ Envy’s show on Power 105.1 where she discussed her skills in the kitchen, BET playing her, the reason her last album “Fantasy Ride” tanked and rumors about 50 Cent copping her a whip.

“That’s a crazy rumor. That’s a cool rumor…in reference to somebody giving you a Rolls Royce”, she told DJ Envy.

Fast forward to 6:30 where Ciara continues to front like she’s not messing with 50 Cent.

Judging by Ciara’s facial expression, change in tone and body language once Envy hit her with the 50 Cent questions…I’m convinced 50′s gorilla a$$ smashed.

Looks like BET took note from MTV’s successful “Hope For Haiti Now” telethon which helped raise over $58 million– sparking the network to create its own telethon titled “SOS Saving Ourselves—Help for Haiti” to be hosted by Queen Latifah, Diddy and Pharrell Williams. The two hour event will take place at the AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami and will air on BET,  Centric, MTV and VH1 on Friday, February 5th at 8 pm ET.

“Words cannot express how I felt watching the catastrophic events unfold in Haiti. I believe it is our duty to come together and help our brothers and sisters in Haiti, especially now, in their greatest hour of need. I have joined forces with Queen Latifah, Pharrell, BET and several of the biggest names in music today to raise funds for the Haiti Relief efforts. Together we can make a difference,” says Diddy.

A string of artists including Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, Chris Brown, Jazmine Sullivan, Akon, Ludacris, Mary J. Blige, Robin Thicke, Monica, Busta Rhymes, India Arie, Kirk Franklin, Nas and Damian Marley are set to hit the stage for this special event. In addition to musical performances, Mr. “Panty Dropper”  aka Trey Songz, Common, David Banner, Missy Elliott, Chrisette Michelle, Jeremih, The Dream, Jason Derulo, T-Pain, Sean Kingston and more will also make appearances.

“The devastation that has occurred in Haiti has broken my heart. My hope is that we can raise enough money to sustain a few of the relief organizations for quite some time as there is a lot of work to be done over there,” said Pharrell Williams. “The goal is not only to bring immediate relief to Haiti but to also rebuild the country and help the country move forward.”

Proceeds from the event will go to Wyclef Jean’s Yele Haiti, CARE, Project MediShare and Children’s Safe Drinking Water.

DIDDY HOLDS 106 & PARK AUDIENCE HOSTAGE! http://str8nyc.com/2009/10/16/diddy-holds-106-park-audience-hostage/ http://str8nyc.com/2009/10/16/diddy-holds-106-park-audience-hostage/#comments Fri, 16 Oct 2009 14:34:00 +0000 J'More http://str8nyc.com/?p=26305 DIDDY HOLDS 106 & PARK AUDIENCE HOSTAGE!

diddy

Looks like Diddy has lost some fans after treating them like criminals during a taping of BET’s 106 & Park. It all started like this, Diddy and his Dirty Money crew pranced around the set throwing wads of cash ( a mixture of $25-$100 in singles) when in the midst of all the frenzy– he lost his ring. According to BET spokeswoman Marcy Polanco,

“As he was throwing the money out to the audience, his ring flew off.”

As if things weren’t already crazy in the studio, a search for the missing ring was launched. Word is Diddy’s staff went wild as they tried to rip up part of the set in an attempt to find the ring valued at $20,000. Although, the rest of the show went on as planned, Diddy made sure he had security screen all 160 audience members with metal detectors after filiming of the show was over before they were allowed to leave. And even after he held audience members hostage and treated them like criminals, the ring still didn’t turn up. A snitch tells NY Post,

“He ain’t getting’ it back. Someone pocketed that, and they probably took it to the nearest jeweler.”

WOW! Diddy has enough bread to cop himself another ring as well as every audience member a damn ring if he wanted to. I can’t believe BET went along with this, but then again it’s BETso this type of behavior is expected.

Earlier today I got an email from homie Andreas Hale with a subject line that read: “Andreas Hale Is No Longer With BET”. Now despite the many emails I’ve received from friends and colleagues in the industry with news about getting the pink slip, this email really struck a chord. Anyone who knows me, knows I’m not a BET fan. Can’t stand the programming, let alone their money hungry top executives. Funny thing is I can remember distinctly the time I landed a interview at BET corporate office (it was during a time I was desperately trying to get out of another evil giant (Sly Fox)), so least to say I was very excited. After three rounds of interviews and writing tests within a three month span, I was convinced I landed the job. It wasn’t until a week after my third interview that it dawned on me “Could I really work for a network whose overall mission statement I didn’t agree with? Would I really be happy at this job? Sure salary on the table was nice, but would I be sacrificing my integrity and belief?” A month later I got a letter via mail that read “Thanks for your interest, but we’ve decided to go with another candidate.” I concluded they researched me and learned about my discontent with BET. So when I got this email from my homie, it simply affirmed my thoughts and why it just wasn’t written for me to be at BET. Some people can ride the wave and put their morals and beliefs aside for the $$$, but there comes a point in life when you just can’t fake the funk…with that said check out Andreas’ email that exposes the truth of BLACK ENTERTAINMENT TELEVISION.

To friends, colleagues and those that should know,

As of today (September 8, 2009) I am no longer the Executive Editor of Music at BET.com.

Upon entering the position at BET I said that I needed one year to see what really went on inside the belly of the beast. I needed 365 days to sleep with the enemy and infiltrate the system. One year to see if they REALLY wanted change at BET.

As someone who has been critical of BET for many years, it surprised many that I would leave my post at HipHopDX last year to take a position at BET. But it was an opportunity I absolutely had to take. I could no longer be critical of this company without accepting the opportunity to change it when given. Although I was hired to bring about change, I was systematically shut down. I wasn’t hired to make noise, I was hired to be silenced.

The truth of the matter is that everything that you thought was wrong with BET is true.

Over the past year I’ve seen a lot to reinforce my position that BET is too far gone in the negative to turn into a positive. We have all always thought the worst, but to actually see it in action is another thing in its entirety. The unprofessionalism, the tom foolery, the favors, the misappropriation of resources, the bad ideas that reinforce negative stereotypes, the emasculation of men, the meetings that break down in full fledged cursing battles, the unpaid overtime, the tears from employees scared for their underpaid and overworked positions and ultimately the unwillingness to change are all harsh realities that I’ve witnessed firsthand.

That is not to say that there aren’t some good people who have sat in the offices of BET. Unfortunately, the good people are not in positions of power to instill any change. Instead, they work their fingers to the bone just to keep their jobs in this harsh economic climate. The other good people ran out of the door as soon as an another employment opportunity presented itself. To say BET was a revolving door would be an understatement.

I came in with a plan to provide balance and to deliver good music to the masses and help make BET relevant again – at least in the dot com world. Those attempts were shut down by out of touch executives who run a dot com but could barely turn on a computer. By those who judge their metrics by page views over absolute unique visitors (that‘s ad sales talk). By those who simply don’t understand the internet.

They brought me in because of my track record but never once took a look at my body of work. If they did, they would have known that I was the pen behind editorials such as “BET’s Coon Picnic” or were aware of the many times I have been critical of their award shows and programming. All they knew is that I played a major role in making a once unknown website into a online media outlet that surpassed theirs and they wanted a piece of the action. Too bad they never researched who I really was.

During my tenure I worked long hours and sometimes succeeded at bringing in decent content to try to reflect the change I wanted to achieve. But it wasn’t without opposition. While some interviews and content initiatives were able to make it through, many others were either shut down or met with ridicule. I offered ideas to incorporate the blog world and to spotlight new talent before MTV did. Those ideas were met with comments such as “This isn’t HipHopDX” or “You don’t know what you are talking about.”

BET is not about the quality of your work. Rather, BET is about the relationships you have with powerful people within the company. BET is not about challenging. Instead, BET is about accepting and saying “yes.” If you have known or followed me over the years, you would know that these are things that simply are not in my character and ultimately resulted in my removal.

For the artists and labels that I have worked with for years, I tried. I did whatever I could to achieve that balance many of us wanted to see happen. To the writers who wanted to writer for BET, I made an attempt but was never given a budget to work with.

Upon my arrival, I was told I would be given a staff. Not true. I had a staff of one to carry out daily operations on a website. I fought tooth and nail to accomplish the minimum (an embeddable player and a site people could navigate) and was constantly brushed off. It was a position that was set up for failure. But I endured as long as I could.

Alas, I have been removed from my position after infiltrating the system and the timing was perfect. I wasn’t let go because the site’s numbers were down. Not because I didn’t work hard. Simply because of a personality clash with an individual whose proverbial ass I didn’t kiss enough. Again, not about the work you do but about the relationships you keep and the sides you take.

I’d like to thank BET for covering the cost of my relocation to bring me to the great city of New York/New Jersey. I’d also like to thank them for putting me in close quarters with people who think like me and will hopefully work with in the near future. I’d also like to thank them for providing me enough controversial content that I observed firsthand and will make for many tales to be told.

I said it and I meant in: One year to either make changes or move on. I left HipHopDX on September 16th 2008. Today is September 8, 2009. Eight days short of a year. Most thought I wouldn’t even last that long. But in that year I’ve had my greatest fears about Black Entertainment Television affirmed.

There is so much wrong with BET that I’d rather not break it down in a single email.

It is pretty good fodder for a book don’t you think?

As of today, Andreas Hale is a free agent.

the-game cast

Looks like BET is finally doing something right! Word is the network is currently in talks with CBS Studios to pick up “The Game” which was unfortunately dropped from CW’s Fall line-up. Back in July, a snitch from BET did say that the network was planning to save the series and to restore its half-hour comedy format. However, the only problem they faced was the licensing fees which were deemed to be “very complicated”.

Real talk, BET might as well pick up “The Game” since they currently run its repeats. The CW was wrong for not bringing the show back for another season, but as you can see they’re trying to be on the major network’s level.
