STR8NYC’S TOP 5 FASHION HUSTLAS….
Fashion Week may be over, but like CoCo Chanel once said “Fashion passes, style remains” and there’s no denying that New York City is filled with fashion hustlas who have impeccable style that keep the public stepping up their own steez. With NYC as the fashion capital of the world and known as the concrete jungle where dreams are made of, we rounded up a list of the “Top 5 Fashion Hustlas” in the city that never sleeps!
5. Kelis- Her music is just as eclectic as her style. This Harlem native has been labeled a trendsetter since day one. Kelis was first to rock the half shaven do’ before Rihanna, Cassie and a few other wannabe’s jacked it. And though Kelis’ has graced the pages of “fashion don’ts”, it’s pretty clear this boss lady skips to her own beat making her a major risk taker. “Well I was definitely the first to do it. The only other person I would give credit before me is Pepa. Other than that, I expect them to copy me. What else are they supposed to do? They’re young. God bless them”. - Kelis (Speaks on swagger jackers)
4. Chanel Iman- With a name like Chanel Iman, it’s quite obvious that the 5’8 stunner was bound to become a top model. The 20 year old has been hustling ever since she learned how to walk! After years of dressing up as a model for Halloween, studying magazines, practicing poses and her walk, Chanel’s hard work eventually paid off landing her third place in Ford Magazine’s Supermodel of the World contest. And ever since, Chanel has strutted her stuff on runways for top designers from Marc Jacobs to Yves Saint Laurent and has shot spreads for Vogue and countless other fashion publications. “It usually takes an ethnic girl — I‘m not saying black, I‘m saying ethnic, let‘s make that clear — twice as long. We‘ve gotta work extra-hard to stay in the game and stay with the girls who do well but aren‘t ethnic.” – Chanel Iman
3. June Ambrose- This fashion hustla is responsible for keeping some of your favorite celebs including Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, Diddy and a plethora of others fly. Getting her start as an intern at Uptown MCA Records, June put her “hustling” skills to work to eventually reign as stylist to the stars. “In LA, your car is your armor. In New York, our sidewalks are our runways—we define ourselves through fashion.”–June Ambrose
2. Kimora Lee Simmons- Say what you want about Miss Kimora, but there’s no denying that she’s a hustla at heart. Kimora got her start strutting her stuff on the runway just after her thirteenth birthday, becoming Karl Lagerfield’s muse. Kimora went from walking on the runway to marrying Hip-hop pioneer, Russell Simmons. There’s no denying that Kimora’s marriage to Uncle Russ came with a whole lot of benefits! From her clothing line, a reality TV show, her very own Barbie and a book, Kimora’s built an empire. And we can’t hate, but only congratulate! “I’m not used to having a boss. I’m the boss. I don’t need the money. I’m filthy fucking rich!”- Kimora Lee Simmons
1. Sean “Diddy” Combs- This Harlem native is the ULTIMATE Hustla! –Never wanted to work for the “man”, he wanted to be the “man”. From being an intern to starting up his own record label and to taking the fashion world by storm creating his own clothing line turning ghetto fabulous into elegance. Diddy does everything with style, not to mention everything he touches turns to platinum! “Ghetto-fabulous! I’m the n*gger who started it: I’m the one driving around in the Rolls-Royce with his hat turned, goin’ down Fifth Avenue with the system booming in the back. Walkin’ into Gucci, shuttin’ it down, buying everything at the mother-f*ckin’ same time. Driving up to Harlem, out to 125th Street, and on my way back downtown goin’ and givin’ hundred-dollar bills to homeless people. No other n*gger out there can say they’re ghetto-fabulous; I’m ghetto-fabulous.” -Sean “Diddy” Combs
