JAY-Z: “HIP-HOP HAS IMPROVED RACE RELATIONS IN AMERICA”
What has hip-hop done for America? Well, according to Jay-Z its done more than any politician or civil rights leader to improve race relations. Jay-Z claims that it’s really hard to indoctrinate racism in a teenager’s head who idolizes rappers such as himself or Snoop Dogg. He explains,
“It has changed America immensely… Hip-hop has done more than any leader, politician, or anyone to improve race relations. Racism is taught in the home… and it’s very hard to teach racism to a teenager who idolizes, say, Snoop Dogg. It’s hard to say, ‘That guy is less than you.’ The kid is like, ‘I like that guy, he’s cool. How is he less than me?’ That’s why this generation is the least racist generation ever. You see it all the time. Go to any club. People are intermingling, hanging out, enjoying the same music”.
I see what Jay is saying, but I don’t agree that hip-hop has improved race relations in America. In fact hip-hop has perpetuated the worst stereotypes of African-Americans not only in America but also globally.
LexAve: Jay is looking at the concept of race relations from his P.O.V. Except he fails to realize the loads of money he’s worth and accrues. When you’re making that type of money, everybody is your friend- black, white, whatever…but when you’re a regular folk of color without a paper trail like Jay’s, it’s a whole ‘nother ballgame. I mean even loads of money doesn’t guarantee racist-free treatment…remember when Oprah was denied entry into that high-end luxury Frech boutique, I think it was Hermes. And Oprah’s paper trail is longer than Jay’s. Jay really needs to rethink that statement.
