Plies aka Goon hit NYC extra hard yesterday. He held a special album listening session at the Atlantic Records office, which we weren’t invited to but loser LowKey (j/k) was there. And later that night he performed at the Knitting Factory to courtesy of Vibe and Myspace to celebrate his first-ever VIBE cover for the magazine’s December 2008 issue.
Though I arrived late assuming the joint will be running on BP time, access was extra smooth. Gena from P2050 held ya gurl down, VIP wrist bands, press pass, wings, wraps…the whole nine, except for free drinks *boo!*. After being outta commission for a while, I got the battery in the back and got the talking with The Real Dudes, Prezzure, Elliot Wilson, Brian Miller, Sowmya and a few other folks. Holding conversations about “what’s the big deal about Plies?” to blogtalk to corporate talk with the Real Dude & Elliot W., it was turning out to be a good night. The second Plies walked in the VIP area, it was all work, whipped out the Casio and got the snappin. Vibe Magazine’s EIC, Danyel Smith, was completely smitten with 5’2” rapper, surely it was all for the flashing lights. Peep the flicks below…
After working the media and posing for the flicks, Plies headed back stage to prep for his set, while FunkFlex and DJ Cipha Sounds warmed up the crowd. And as predicted like in true BP time manner, Plies hit the stage around 10pm originally scheduled for 9pm. As the crowd was wild out to his few commercial hits like “Shawty” and “Bust It Baby”, I was up in the balcony fiending for the set to finish so I can get home at a decent hour…I’ve been up since 5:30am, can you really blame me? And not to mention, I’ve never been a Plies stan…hell I’m still scratching my head at his Vibe December cover. As the minutes rolled by, I got a little introspect into the southern rapper…he’s very grateful. Many times looking up to the sky as if calling for the one almighty to repeatedly thanking his fans for giving him a shot, especially in NY. Guess its true what they say “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere!” Overall, despite his goonish talk…he’s got a soft spot- not on some Kanye mess…but extremely grateful! We’ll what December 16th delivers for Plies as his third album Da Realist drops.
Oh yeah and as for checking for time, I got home at 11:30pm…=SUCCESS!
