WANT 2 KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE 2 BE BLACK IN AMERICA?!
Ever wondered how other blacks feel about living in the good ole’ U.S.A? Well, tune in tonight to watch CNN’s interesting 4 hour documentary series entitled “Black in America” which examines what it’s like to be a black person living in America. Part 1 of the documentary, “The Black Woman & Family” touches on the varied experiences of black women and families as well as investigating the reasons behind single homes, racial disparities between students and the impact of HIV/AIDS in the black community. Part 2 of the documentary which airs on July 24, “The Black Man” evaluates the state of black men in America and explores the controversial topics of black men and fatherhood, disparities between blacks and whites in education, career and financial achievement, and factors leading to why so many of our brothers are locked up. The documentary also examines the achievements of black men and the importance of the positive influences of black fathers. A must-see!
TUNE IN JULY 23RD & 24TH @ 9pm ET/PT on CNN!
Sidebar: Check out this comment by a loyal reader/super producer DDub:
“I’m not feeling the way CNN chose to shine a light on this topic. Being Black is not an experiment gone wrong. We are not to be studied, just want to be considered and not only when there is a black candidate running for office. We are not only black once every couple of years, we are black all day every day. It’s ironic how CNN wants to address the situation of blacks … when there is a black man running for president. It seems like they only concentrate on us when we are running for something or better yet running from something. Maybe the media should take some time and figure out why AMERICA itself is in this situation. Not every black person in America is from a single parent home and criminal minded. Why is the media always portraying us as ‘the other’? ”
ANY THOUGHTS?!

Hmm I’m actually happy they are showing this! This has created alot of buzz (emails passed around & on Facebook, etc). The whole point of the show IS to show why America itself is in the siutation. Hope folks don’t get the wrong idea from the description.
IT ACTUALLY HELPS US. It proves reasons why we’ve been outcasted due to racism:
Did you know that companies in the US have said they would hire a white man with a FELONY record and NO high school education BEFORE they would hire a BLACK man with NO criminal record and a 4-year degree?
The aforementioned statistic and many others will be revealed during the series.Wednesday is dedicated entirely to the plight of the Black Man in America.
It exposes our country

I dont think it helps at all… in fact it reinforces the stereotypes that have this country( mostly the media) blinded. The fact of the matter is our situation doesn’t define us… our decisions do. This is coming from a person that is constantly judged not by my actions but by the actions of what was seen on CNN. This country is ideology is all about image. If you have a television or even pick up a paper you can read all about our “exposure”. I guess, after all the TV shows and billions of articles depicting us in a certain way, this will be the one that finally clears up all the misconceptions. *Sarcasm* I just believe its tainted because it only shows on side: Incarceration, single mother, and racial disparities……I guess America has never seen that before or maybe they havent seen enough of it. *Sarcasm*

Im 25 and I must admit this is a good documentary… young people watch this please!… very informational and educational they talked about many issues blacks deal with: relationship (male & female) mix relations…. mixed families and how theyre accepted in the world… women who decide to be single due to their status and the decrease in black men…. women &HIV… homicide….I telling you all if you missed it you missed out…. If they make this a DVD i buying it…. that was a good documentary thanks to CNN…and its not even “black history month” another one is coming on tomorrow on CNN 8:00 central and 9:00 Eastern we’re always on here talking about which celebrity look “fab” and what boots are cute… we need to have talks about empowering ourselves and what we need to stop doing in order to get ahead in live as black people

I actually appreciated the show’s airing last night. I am a teacher and graduate student that currently spends an absorbent amount of time researching the pandemic of what has become the state of education for African Americans at this time. The “Culture of Poverty” theories addressed were valid topics that need be examined. They (CNN) did display a family that represented the growing number of blacks graduating from college and embarking upon careers. When I first heard of this on Oprah and Friends I was pleasantly suprised by the amount of time being devoted to its airing. I think we can all agree that this was needed, at least it further opens the lines of communication between all races. Hopefully we can address some of these issues that are now being brought to the forefront even more.
