THINGS THEY SAY: ANGIE STONE CRIES RACISM
THINGS THEY SAY: ANGIE STONE CRIES RACISM“Well, you know it goes back to the very beginning. If you were light skinned you were in, if you were dark skinned you were out. It very well works that way in the industry. You see very [few] dark skinned people on top of the game. Most of the superstars are very fair or mullatto people. You can check your stats. It works that way in the film world too. I have lost almost every single opportunity to star in a film to Macy Gray or Jill Scott because they’re light and I’m dark. I’ve been told so many times that it’s a certain look that they’re looking for. So you can’t even use weight anymore. You can’t use age because everybody’s over 35 that’s running around doing it. It comes down to what is more appealing. I’m only good for the pro political stuff that will afford all of my people from the hood to vote for the right president – or to support whatever because I’m more on their level, so to speak. So to me it hasn’t changed much. Slavery has just taken on a whole new different direction but it’s the same process.”

She has a point. We can’t say that color bias is solely our fault. The entertainment industry rarely finds darker women attractive unless they look like a chocolate dipped barbie doll.

She speaks the truth. The same thing happens in the work place. White, blacks and the latin culture has picked on identifying black people by using Wesley Snipes’ color as the baseline for understanding the color divide and that’s a shame. I hear a lot of black people who say that Obama is not black enough. Again, it’s a shame. This trend will never stop when it comes down to appear and money being involved.

maybe it’s her acting abilities because denzel, don cheadle, angela bassett, eddie murphy, forest whitaker, morgan freeman etc seem to be doing fine. Take some acting lessons to be on top of your game before you complain.

What she’s saying ain’t news. If Halle Berry has had issues with being Black in Hollywood, you know, Angie Stone is. Now, realistically, she knows her weight compounds the problem, but the entertainment industry is still racist and sexist as hell. To “Hope4more” almost all those actors were male, we know a women’s appearance is held in almost greater regard than her talent in the industry. And for the record Angela Basset is not dark-skinned, she ain’t light, but she’s not as dark Angie.
