THINGS THEY SAY: LL, THE MAD RAPPER!
TweetI think we all know by now who in fact is the mad rapper! LL Cool J recently spoke to MTV about Def Jam and his upcoming album Exit 13…dude is still pissed:
“I address a lot of issues I have with the record company, but I kept it business. It feels good to speak my voice,” Cool J said recently in New York. “People are listening. These guys fail to realize that when you talk about Def Jam, you’re talking about my legacy. Everything that ever happened at Def Jam is my legacy. Without me being a 16-year-old with my rhyme book, Def Jam [wouldn't] exist. Everything that’s ever been a success up there is a product of me, and I’ve given birth to it. I didn’t personally attack anyone [on 'Queens'], but at the same time I have the right to speak on something I helped build. When [Def Jam co-founder] Russell [Simmons] feels something, he speaks on it as Russell Simmons; LL speaks on it through his music.”
“This is a time when everything’s real,” he continued. “You go on blogs and everything, people know when people are lying. Things are not all rosy up there [at Def Jam]. Too many [artists] have suffered: Method Man, Redman, the Roots, Fabolous, Ludacris! The list goes on. Nobody is getting promoted the way they should be promoted. I’m one man. I can’t battle a whole record label. So we not gonna try to turn this into what it’s not. To try and battle a record label is foolish. It’s bad enough they are calling around to radio stations telling them not to play my records…“This is my last record on Def Jam, so it’s important that the record is not just another record… it’s gonna be a great reminder to people that I really did start that company with Russell [Simmons] and Rick Rubin and Heidi Smith, the secretary… I’ma deliver [what] I’m supposed to deliver and I’m not gonna ignore my male fans this time. I’m gonna embrace everybody. It’s gonna be real. I’mma be blunt, brutally honest, be frank, speak with clarity, and they gonna feel me.”
On the real, I usually don’t feed into complaining folks but LL has got a point on this one! Nowadays the only way to sell records is by scandal & beef, hence the pseudo Fiddy vs. Kanye battle. The music no longer speaks for itself!
Why everytime a rapper doesn’t sell they blame the label or the artist runnin’ the label? Todd Smith was garbage & LL totally sold out his male fans (No Homo) LL is slowly losing my respect, it seems that he is jealous that he wasn’t offered the president position over Jay-Z, the fact of the matter is LL’s last CD was crap! A bunch of radio friendly r&b wannabe cuts with a feature on every one! And now people are supposed to take him serious cause he’s aligned himself with 50?! True enough I can see where he may be upset of course American Gangster is gonna get that heavy promotion so stop cryin’ & deal with it.
Furthermore on “Queens” we know who he’s talking about why do MC’s feel they have to run to G-Unit to get respect in the hood?
The fact of the matter is posters, stickers & street teams don’t sell records, true talent does Cool j’s last CD had 2 videos out before the CD came out don’t blame Hov cause the people didn’t respond.
All I’m really trying to say is that some artists aren’t selling because they’re trying to stay relevant in a industry where the next dance craze (Soulja Boy) is what seems to reach the kids, the attention span of the average consumer is so short they’ll be on the next fad before the spring!
And on a side note I don’t know what all the fuss is about over Joe Buddens? I mean I know he’s the shit in NY but I’m from Detroit and he’s not mentioned as being a great MC but maybe a new deal and CD can change my mind!

On the real LL is real when he speaks about being a part of Def jams legacy. But you have to understand that jay has rhymnes about raping Def Jam the same way they humped on cats when they was just al lil label. So I respect that because jay told you how he is coming…. He’s pillaging. But everything LL is hollering abot is true story, he did have a part in building Def jam, and because of that he should be afforded the proper due. It’s a case of different agendas, but in this case Jay is a homo, sorry Larry Johnson no disrespect intended.
