Once again ya gurl, Tina aka Skool, would like to extend a good ole shout out to Hennessy & Hot 97 for bridging the gap between established artists and aspiring artists with incredible talent. The performances all in all were impeccable, and the free drinks provided by Hennessey got the crowd loose, which complimented the vibes of the evening and made the night flow extra smooth.

Erin Christine, a wonderful up-and-coming artist by way of Connecticut was the opening act and her performance was nothing short of spectacular. She has an amazing voice that is sultry, melodic, and oh so passionate. That girl hit the craziest notes, and while she was hammering away at her electronic keyboard. Like check baby out! And next up, was ya boy Donnis who I must admit, was one of the coolest dudes I’ve met, hit the stage to liven everything up with his ATL-style and dirty south beats that shook the entire room. He was so energetic and off the wall!

Next up was “Mr. All I Want Is You” aka Miguel. Ladies brace yourself! He was just that good, so good that you felt his lyrics and passion through his completely powerful and melodic voice. Miguel literally left everyone in a state of bliss, which worked well to bring out the headlining act, Bilal who was AMAZING and SOULFUL! He has not recorded an album in 9 years, and after last night I know why. A true artist needs no description nor definition, he only needs due praise, and I’ll give him just that. Please go cop his album Airtight Revenge in stores now. #GoodTimes

Contrary to what snitches claim, there was more to Fantasia’s suicide attempt than finding out the man she was in a committed relationship was a married man…it was a culmination of all the stress for the past six years. Fame and fortune…it ain’t for everybody.

She explains:

“There’s just so many things that I had to deal with – me almost losing my whole career, not having management, and lawyers and everybody who said they had my back, nobody taking care of me, me taking care of my whole family. (There is) so much that people don’t understand, they just see the glitz and the glamour and they feel like life is so perfect (for me). But we (celebrities) are human and we go through things…

“I think everybody feels like I tried to harm myself over a man. But I’ve been through a lot of bad relationships. That had something to do with it because it was so heavy, it was brand new information. I was already going through so much but I think it was just six years of everything, of me holding everything on the inside and not letting it out. I just got very, very tired.”

The singer insists she is now putting the past behind her – she’s seeing a life coach and is eager to go back to work.

She adds:

“There are people who love and support me and just want to see me keep going and who’ve been through the same thing… and I said, ‘You know what, there’s no perfect person’. I’m just thankful for all the doctors who were there for me because they didn’t treat me like Fantasia, they treated me like ‘Tasia, and I needed that.”

Glad to see Fantasia is getting better both physically and mentally.

Her designs are daring, edgy and unique–all the while paying homage to her hometown. Perhaps, you’ve seen LaureLuxe in the pages of Harper’s Bazaar or even on some of your favorite celebrities including Nicki Minaj, Lady GaGa, the ladies of Dirty Money and others who’ve all donned her signature pieces. Check out our exclusive interview with LaureLuxe.

Str8NYC: Who is LaureLuxe? Is it safe to say that she’s your alter-ego?

LaureLuxe: Yes, in a way. LaureLuxe exposes my diva side where I can just go crazy and create jewelry that is ultra sexy and fun. When I make and wear LaureLuxe the reaction is always head turning. It really makes you feel glamorous and gives you star power. Laurel DeWitt, the person, is more of a homebody who likes to cook, bake, make things, and watch her HBO shows religiously [Laughs].

Str8NYC: How did you get started?

LaureLuxe: I went to school for fashion design, Pratt Insititute, where I found my love for metal and developed my craft. It all started with a metal bra that I made for a Wearable Arts class that had a fantastic reaction in the fashion department. So I built from there!

Str8NYC: You’ve worked for some of fashion’s biggest names like Rocawear, Oscar De La Renta, and Calvin Klein. When did you realize it was time to break out and do your own thing?

LaureLuxe: Often times in corporate America, talent is under appreciated and taken advantage of. I was offered a job under a lot of false promises. After a little while I took the risk and took everything I learned with me, quit my job, and went for it!

Str8NYC: Have you always had a passion for designing?

LaureLuxe: I was an artist my whole life. I had an amazing art program in high school where I had training in everything from painting and drawing to photography and ceramics. When pursuing my career, I made a conscious decision to merge my art with something that would not necessarily leave me to be a “starving artist”. So I made the decision to go into fashion.

Str8NYC: Do you see yourself doing anything else?

LaureLuxe: Well, I am an artist/designer. I want the LaureLuxe brand to expand into different categories, like LaureLuxe Home etc. Stay tuned!

Str8NYC: Who or what inspires your pieces?

LaureLuxe: I am asked this question often. I have recently just been telling people I’m crazy [Laughs]. My mind works differently then the average, and I just randomly think of ways the chain and metal can connect and create the silhouettes on the body. It all comes from my head and I consciously try to evolve and push boundaries.

Str8NYC: Who have you designed pieces for? Which celebrities have worn your pieces?

LaureLuxe: I have done custom pieces for Nicki Minaj and Lady Gaga. Other celebrities I have dressed include Super Model Sessilee Lopez, Amerie, Cyndi Lauper, the ladies of Dirty Money, Olivia, Amanda Blank, and Mila Jovovich.

Str8NYC: Name a celebrity that you’d really want to see rocking LaureLuxe.

LaureLuxe: Beyonce! Well, I think it’s more of her alter ego, Sasha Fierce, but you get the idea. She is sexy and daring! Plus, anything she wears looks amazing on her.

Str8NYC: Where do you see yourself in five years?

Lauryn Hill is a musical genuis and enigma, like most creative geniuses Lauryn Hill was hip hop’s greatest hope. She managed to merge both pop, soul, RnB, rap, spoken word all into one. Thus making it a phenomenon no one ’till this day can match. L.Boogie is truly one in a million. Luckily for us true & nostalgic L.Boogie fans, she’s heard our cries for an encore and is very much considering making another record. During a recent NPR interview with Zoe Chace, who scored this rare interview with the superstar following a show out in Santa Rose, California- Ms. Hill finally opened up to talk about why she stopped recording, her creative addiction, and a possible comeback in the works. But before we listen to the interview, it must be noted Zoe Chace’s experience in scoring this AMAZING interview….

NPR’s Zoe Chace, in her report on Hill, says that before the interview she is told not to touch the singer or look her in the eye, and that Hill, instead of addressing people directly, sometimes writes directions on a post-it note and sticks it on people’s chests. Chace says that she didn’t actually expect to get an interview but was pleasantly surprised when Hill tells her to get in her car after a show. She says Hill appears to be “very sane, very serious, still so beautiful.”

Chace asks Hill why she stopped putting out albums, and Hill replies that “There were a number of different reasons, but partly, y’know, the support system that I needed was not necessarily in place. There were things about myself, things that I needed to go through and experience, in order for me to feel like it was worth it.”

Hill, who grew up listening to male vocalists such as Jackie Wilson, Donny Hathaway, and Stevie Wonder, says she’s looking for ways to increase her vocal range.

“Most people have never really heard me sing-sing-sing,” Hill says. “If I do record next time, perhaps there will be an expanded context. People can hear a bit more.”

Hill, who has five children, also tells NPR that she may be ready to record some new material, now that her kids are starting to grow up. “I think it’s just time, and I’m starting to get excited again,” Hill says. Source

Now press play….

“I’m starting to get excited again. Believe it or not, I think what people are attracted to about me, if anything, is my passion.”

WOW!!! Realtalk, if and when Lauryn drops with a new record, its sure to be a problem, no doubt! Yes she’s been gone for far too long, but her comeback will be very much appreciated and welcomed with screams and open arms…best believe it!

Thanks MissJia

She may remind you of the Queen of Hip-hop soul Mary J. Blige or even Keyshia Cole, but don’t get it twisted–Paula’s story is completely different. Paula is no newbie to the game, as she’s been around for year and has worked with some of today’s biggest names from Kanye West to Ne-Yo. Her vocals can also be heard on Three Six Mafia’s Oscar winning song “Hard Out Here For A Pimp”. After a brief stint with Sony Records, Paula sought out the independent route and established her very own label Rublewood. Check out our exclusive interview with Paula Campbell–where she talks Beyonce, the state of R&B music, balancing motherhood and more.

Str8NYC: You’ve been singing for a while and you’re a songwriter as well; at what age did you realize you were just destined to be a singer?

PC: Honestly, I have never wanted to do anything but sing. I can remember back to when I was about four years old–I wanted to be a singer then. And I wrote my first song when I was seven.

Str8NYC: Wow! Do you remember the name of the song?

PC: Yep! It was called “Love” and it was about a little boy I had a crush on.

Str8NYC: Awww! Too cute! [Laughs]

Str8NYC: Who are your inspirations.

PC: Man, I have so many. But my musical inspirations of all time are definitely Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and Prince.

Str8NYC: You’re hailed as the “Queen of the DMV”, so in five words or less tell me why you’re the “queen”.

PC: In five words?

Str8NYC: Yes.

PC: [Laughs] I’m strong. I’m intelligent. I’m responsible. I’m loyal. And I’m real.

Str8NYC: What sets you apart from all the other R&B chicks?

PC: First and foremost I don’t sound like any of them. Secondly, there’s a lane that’s wide open for me. I think B [Beyonce] is definitely more pop, but when you look and you see these other people [singers], I think people probably compare me more to Mary J. or Keyshia Cole–the female artist with the struggle and the story and that’s got a lot of hood in her. But what sets me aside from that is a completely different story. I’m not overly aggressive. I’m not in a state where I always gotta be hood. How can I word this and not sound like I’m dissing anybody? I fit in everywhere. How about that [laughs]!

Str8NYC: Do you think R&B is dead?

PC: I do not believe that is dead. If you would’ve asked me maybe two years ago, I would’ve definitely said yeah, but I honestly believe that R&B is coming back around. If you look at the music that Mario is doing and even Trey Songz they’re going back to real R&B music. You know, Keyshia Cole is doing a great job! Jazmine Sullivan, oh my God! You know people are really singing real music with substance that tells stories and make sense.

Str8NYC: As a single mother, how do you manage family and work?

PC: I would probably say I don’t. I don’t really know a way to manage being a mother and an artist, you know what I mean? I’m always a mom first. Everything that comes or however God brings it to me is just the way I accept it. I always make sure I take time and put time in for my child and everything else is secondary. So put God first, my daughter second, my music and everything else.

Str8NYC: I first saw you perform at “DMV Helps Haiti” benefit concert where you were the only female on the bill and you really held your own. You sang “Ain’t Nobody Stupid” and I remember you saying Ne-Yo penned the track. How did that collaboration come about?

PC: I was actually signed to Ne-Yo for a short period of time after my deal with Sony [Records]. We’re still really, really good friends. But with “Ain’t Nobody Stupid”, they had all these kind of like pop songs for me. So Ne-Yo was like, “Yo I hear something different for Paula…there’s something deeper. She’s darker than this bubble gum music”. We got in the studio and started working. “Ain’t Nobody Stupid” was one of the first songs he did for me. It actually won a contest for Glamour magazine and Ciara directed the video. But by the time all of that was over, we never really promoted it.

Str8NYC: Who else have you worked with in the industry?

PC: I’ve worked with so many people! Steve Taylor, Rockwilder, Makeeba Riddick who’s also from Baltimore–gotta show love to her too! I hate it when I forget people. I’m so sorry [laughs]. I’ve worked with a lot of people.

Str8NYC: Who haven’t you worked with yet that you really want to work with?

PC: I would love, love, love to work with Missy [Elliott].

Str8NYC: Missy?

PC: Yes! I think I could do so much great work with Missy on the producing tip and writing. I would love to work with Missy! And I don’t know a female artist who would ever say and mean that they really didn’t want to work with B [Beyonce]. I would love to do something with Beyonce.

Str8NYC: Speaking of Beyonce, you’re not only a singer, but you’re also a writer. How do you feel about singers who take credit for songs that they haven’t even written?

PC: You know, I think it’s unfair. However, if you’re a new writer and nobody would know anything about you unless this multi-platinum selling artist sang your song, that’s kind of like your payment for basically giving you an outlet to put your music out there on a wholenother level.

Str8NYC: I see what you’re saying. But every song though?

PC: I think every song is a bit much. I’ll be completely honest. I think to ask for anybody’s publishing and you didn’t write the song that’s a bit much. But again, if I’m Joe Schmo out in North Carolina and nobody knows about me. But my pen is so sick and I just happen to get this song to Beyonce–who is going to take my song to the next level and once people know I did this song for Beyonce then I’ll be able to have leeway to do what I want to do…I mean can you really argue with it?

Str8NYC: True, that’s like catch 22.

PC: Definitely a catch 22!

Str8NYC: You’re a very pretty lady. If a guy wanted to holla at you, what would he have to do to get your attention or even a date?

PC: I don’t even know [laughs]. I would say just be himself. I appreciate genuine people and the guys that I’ve dated in my past most people are like, “Oh my God! You dated him?” [laughs]. I appreciate the innocence of it all. So when people come to you and they’re like 100% or you believe they’re 100% them flaws and all…I appreciate that. Because I know that if I can deal with that today, then two years from now I can deal with it as well.

A few things were revealed on the call, which we’ll get into later. But, we’re gonna touch on Diddy comparing his new client to the late Notorious B.I.G. first. When asked what’s the best quality he sees in Rick Ross as an artist, Diddy responded:

“I think overall his approach to a record, you know what I’m saying? And overall him as an artist. He doesn’t just talk about the regular stuff that you hear a lot of cats talking about now. Everything he talks about is from the soul and is from his heart. And his approach to the record, you know what I’m saying? The way he approaches the record is from a real standpoint, you can tell he’s approaching it from an honest standpoint. You know, I’ve always been wanting to work with artists that have a certain vocal tone and he sounds like a giant–he is a giant. He just has that personality, you know what I’m saying? He’s a very unique artist. He’s bigger than just an artist–he’s a brand! And that’s one of the reasons I wanted to work with him is because I feel we can do bigger and better things. And having worked with Biggie, somebody that also was talking about things in the street. I’m not comparing him to Biggie, before you know we get started going down that road. But, I am saying that there is similarities in the mental approach of a record that I do have a familiarity with. To me, however anybody wants to take it–he’s the Biggie of the South. Hands down!”

LISTEN TO FULL AUDIO BELOW…

WHOA! Realtalk, Biggie and Rick Ross shouldn’t even be mentioned in the same sentence. The only thing they have in common is that they’re both fat and black. Rick Ross may talk about the streets, but his past as CO tells a completely different story.

Be on the look out for more tidbits from the call…

In the interview with theLIFEfiles, Drizzy talks about his album leaks and how although it is upsetting he is certain that he has fans who are going to go out and support him. And I’m not going to front, I’ve heard the leaks and they are some good tracks. But even without having heard the leaked tracks, I am almost certain that Drake will make something epic and his album sales will be up there.

What Drake has done is what Weezy was doing up until the release of Tha Carter II with the endless collabos and singles dropped to create a solid buzz which led him to successfully selling his album. Let’s support good artists, as we are all tired of Soulja Boy and Bullsh*t rap!

What do you guys think? Has your boy been hyped up too much or will he deliver?
