IN CASE U MISSED IT: BET AWARDS ‘08 HIGHLIGHTS

Usher opened up the awards with his hit “Love In This Club”. As much as I love me some Usher, for an opener his set was kind of weak. I would’ve enjoyed it better if Ursh perfomed the remix to this joint…bringing out Jeezy, T.I. and maybe even Beyonce. Now that would’ve gotten the show started right!

One of the kings of hip hop, Mr. West joined Young Jeezy for a stellar performance of “Put On”. They got it poppin’!

Keyshia Cole hit the stage to perform “Heaven Sent” and “Let It Go”. I’m a Keyshia fan but seriouly this chick needs a lesson or two on how to put on a show. Keyshia on wax is hot but Keyshia on live is an absolute flop. If it wasn’t for Lil’ Kim’s barbie looking ass, Keyshia’s set would’ve really sucked. Lil’ Kim saved it.

Ne-Yo got the crowd going with his club banger “Closer”. I swear this song makes the thuggist dude loss his cool and break out his pink feathers. Granted Ne-Yo ain’t much of a dancer but he did his thing with all the shufflin’ & kickin’ footwork. Heyyyyyy!

Alicia Keys did her thing with “Teenage Love Affair”. And ya know Keys paid homage to some old school heads including SWV, En Vogue, and TLC.

T-Boz sounded a bit too rough and flat for me…I mean I know its been minute since her performing days but next time drink some tea and prep that throat. SWV needs to ease up on the buffet and work it out like En Vogue. Overall it was nice to see all the ladies hit the stage.

Rev. Al Green was honored with the lifetime achievement award and blazed his set with a tune of oldies but goodies. True Legend! Before his set, Jill Scott, Anthony Hamilton, and OMG! Maxwell did their renditions of some Al Green joints. Maxwell maybe looking totally different but he still got that ill voice…still gives you chills.

The dirty south got it in with performances by T-Pain, Flo-Rida, Rick Ross, DJ Khaled, & Ludacris. WOW! T-Pain got his hype-man on. Peep the video at 4:47, when the camera got on Lil’ Wayne…he looked real hyped and ready to jump on stage. Lol. Ludacris killed it…no lie!

After bagging the best male RnB artist award, Chris Brown performed “With You” and then killed the show with the best dance duo set of the night with Ciara to “Take You Down”. His vocals were a bit weak but the dancing was on point. BET stay instigating some mess….when Ciara & Chris did their sexual romping like dancing the cameras quickly got a shot of Rihanna’s reaction. Too funny. Realtalk, I think Chris Brown got the game on lock and Usher needs to step up it. Peep the ill move when Ciara slides down Chris’ back and he props her back up by “kicking” her head….so sick!

After four years outta the game, BET decided to give Nelly a shot at keeping the crowd amped by letting him perform his new joints “Stepped on My Jays” and “Party People” featuring Ciara, JD, and Fergie. Prior to the set, Nelly got a weird introduction by D.L. Hughley where it suddenly got interjected by Ashanti. Poor Nelly and Ashanti are really struggling to stay relevant…so sad! Ciara of course killed it once again and sported a new wig, clearly she got a kick outta all this role playing. As for Fergie, shorty was way off! Usually she’s extra hype and all over the stage, last night she seemed a bit laid back and stiff…could it be because of the baby bump? Hmmm….

Rihanna maybe the hottest artist out today but her perfomances are straight weak. If you look closely, when the camera did crowd cutaways you can see people on their blackberrys and sidekicks…BORING! Of course Chris Brown played sing-a-long.

Lil’ Wayne won “Viewer’s Choice” award and closed out the 3 hour telecast with a major performance of “A Millie” alongside hype man T-Pain aka T-Wayne. I expected more from Weezy but assuming he was sober he didn’t really let loose like usual.

Overall the awards show was ok, nothing spectacular. It lacked some major star quality (i.e. Jay-Z, Beyonce, & 50 Cent) and suspense and jaw dropping moments. After all was done…BET did their thing but now I’m looking forward to what the MTV Music Award has in store this year.
