A. KEYS OPENS UP TO EW!

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Alicia keys opens up about aspects of her life, her career and finding her inner-self. You would think that after selling 11.5 million CDs, winning nine Grammys and collaborating with damn near everyone in the music industry that shorty was happy. But,  Ms. Keys admits that she was depressed and took time out to find herself. She tells EW,

”I discovered a lot about myself I didn’t like. I would look in the mirror and I didn’t know who that person was. I didn’t like my eyes; I didn’t like what they said. I couldn’t sleep. I was uncomfortable all the time, and irritated and frustrated.”

Her homegirl attempts to squash the rumors about Alicia being gay and explains why she acquired her tomboyish style.

”When we would walk down the street and she would get whistled at by men, she would get so bothered. She forced herself into wearing baggy clothes and putting her hair in a bun. She would dress almost to be unattractive. She understands why people might’ve thought that. She was a little rough around the edges with her Timberlands and jeans and braids and rough talk.” But Brothers (A.Keys’ boyfriend) is an undeniable presence. ”Clearly,” says Rose, ”she has a man in her life.”

Alicia took Beyonce’s “Upgrade” song to whole ‘nother level, by trading in her cornrows for curls and urban streetwear to high-end couture. She adds,

”It’s not like I was consciously like, I want to make a change. It just naturally started happening with my freedom of expression, [gaining] more confidence, and letting go.” I’m at the point now like, F— it. Who gives a s—? I don’t really care what you think about me.”

When asked if she had any trepidation about being haunted by old insecurities as she returned to the limelight, she quickly responded,

”No…. Some people are not gonna get the nice side of me all the time, but that’s just too bad ’cause I’m not gonna pretend anymore. I’m not gonna sacrifice my spirit for nobody.” Source

Glad that she has found herself and decided to put all of that energy into her new album. A. Keys is definitely killin’ it this year. So move over Beyonce, it’s A. Keys turn to shine! Check out more scans of the article below.
