L.A. REID CO-SIGNS NAS’ “NIGGER” ALBUM
TweetAt the NYC premiere of “American Gangster” at the Apollo Theatre on Friday night, L.A. Reid brushed off reports that Def Jam isn’t supporting Nas’ decision to title his December 11th album Nigger. In fact, the label backs the rapper 100%.
“Really, who’d you hear that from?” Reid said, acting as if he were surprised. We support everything our artists do, everything!” he added. “We stand firmly behind and beside our artists with pride and with pleasure. Anything Nas wants to do, I completely stand beside him. Nas is prolific, he’s prophetic, he’s a genius, an amazing artist of respect. So, while I’m not sure exactly all that [the title] entails, I know it’s smart, so I stand behind him. That’s real.”
Common, Method Man also offered support for Nas in New York on Friday night but ya’ll know Rev. Al Sharpton was all up in arms about the album title. He’s even gone as far to saying Nas is in fact “Helping Out” racists. I ask myself sometimes, why do people give this word so much power?? I understand the historical signficance and it’s affect on generations but I still ask why give it so much power…if you take away it’s power, should it still hold weight in 2007…I’m just saying! It’s called freedom of speech for a reason. On the flipside, Nas is looking to sell albums and given the Fiddy syndrome…the formula to sell albums nowadays is building controversy. This is a hard one…

I think that Nas is a good artist so when I read on Global Grind that he would be putting out a new album I was excited. But his album title is shocking, which is exactly we Im sure he choose it. Rap artists album sales are slumping so it is going to take something new and controversial to get peoples attention. However, I don’t think that it is a good idea to promote the use of the word, especially when this country is involved in a sort of race war.

Here it comes. Black people, be prepared to be called a “nigger” at your job by your “hip hop” suburban co-workers.

LA Reid is Part of the problem. Out of the “hip hop” artists on his label. How many of them promote CRACK? TWENTY-TWO! (…and that’s just from their websites!) Sheesh, two of them are named after the same crack dealer — Rick “Freeway Ricky” Ross. After years of consistently peddling crack into our ear-holes, he’s full on endorsing the systematic demise of his own community. (or the community that bears his roots)
